J. Red Sandstone

Jodhpur Red Sandstone — listed here as J. Red Sandstone — is one of the most architecturally significant stones from India’s sandstone heartland. Named for the city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, this stone shares the bold iron-oxide colouration that characterises Rajasthan’s great red sandstones, but with a distinctively Jodhpur character: fine-grained, workable, and available in a range of red tones from warm rose to deep crimson.

Stone Harbor sources J. Red Sandstone directly from the Jodhpur quarry region. The stone’s durability and workability have made it a staple of both traditional Indian architecture and contemporary export markets across Europe and the Middle East.

Origin and Composition

J. Red Sandstone is a sedimentary stone quarried in the Jodhpur region of Rajasthan, India. Its red colouration — ranging from pinkish-red to deep crimson — comes from iron oxide (hematite) concentrated within and around the quartz grain matrix. The fine grain structure and good cementation provide both strong workability for carving and detailing, and excellent weather resistance for exterior applications.
