Kandla Grey Sandstone

Kandla Grey Sandstone is the most widely exported Indian sandstone in the world — and with good reason. Quarried from the Bhilwara and Boondi districts of Rajasthan across a 125-kilometre belt, this stone ships in daily volumes estimated at 800 metric tons to construction and landscaping projects in the UK, USA, Australia, Germany, and across Europe. At Stone Harbor, we source Kandla Grey directly from this quarry belt, processing it for export at the same high standard we apply to all our natural stone products.

What makes this stone so consistently in demand is not just its appearance — it is its performance. Kandla Grey is a hard-wearing, frost-resistant, and chemically stable stone with properties that suit the full range of outdoor applications in temperate and cold climates. It endures British winters, Australian summers, and everything in between.

Origin and Composition

Kandla Grey Sandstone forms over millions of years from the compaction of fine quartz grains cemented together by calcite and silica. The stone is predominantly quartz — approximately 80% — which accounts for its hardness, density, and chemical resistance. This high quartz content also gives it a natural resistance to acids, alkalis, and salinity, making it suitable for coastal construction where salt-laden moisture would degrade softer stones.

The grey colour ranges from light silver-grey to darker charcoal, with subtle beige undertones. For projects requiring strict colour consistency, the stone can be graded and supplied as Light Grey or Dark Grey. The natural variation between individual pieces is part of its organic appeal, not a defect.
