Mandana Sandstone

Mandana Sandstone is one of the oldest and most architecturally celebrated sandstones quarried in India. Named for the Mandana region and traditionally used in sacred spaces, courtyard pavements, and the ghats (riverfront steps) of Indian temples across Rajasthan and beyond, this stone carries with it a connection to Indian cultural and religious heritage that few building materials can claim.

Its deep red-brown colour — rich, dense, and intensely saturated with iron oxide — makes it unmistakable. Its non-slip surface even when wet has made it the preferred stone for the stepped bathing ghats found at sacred water bodies across India, a performance credential that architects and landscape designers worldwide have recognised for outdoor and public-use applications.

Origin and Composition

Mandana Sandstone is a sedimentary stone quarried in the Mandana region of Rajasthan, India. Its deep red-brown colouration is produced by high concentrations of iron oxide (hematite) in the quartz-dominant matrix. The stone has a dense grain structure that gives it exceptional hardness — higher than most other Indian sandstones — and excellent resistance to abrasion and surface wear. Its natural surface provides effective slip resistance even without surface treatment.
