Two buyers can order the exact same granite and end up with slabs that look nothing alike. The stone is identical. The finish is not. Finish is the surface treatment applied after the slab is cut, and it changes the colour depth, the feel underfoot, the slip resistance, and how much cleaning you sign up for.
We ship granite from India in three finishes on most orders: polished, honed, and leather. This guide walks through what each one actually does to the stone, where it earns its place, and how to specify it so the container that lands at your port matches the sample you approved.
Polished granite
Polishing grinds the surface through finer and finer abrasives until it reflects light like glass. This is the finish most people picture when they think of granite. It pulls the colour and the mineral movement forward, so a stone like Imperial White reads brighter and the grey flecks look sharper than they do raw.
The gloss also seals the surface tighter than any other finish, which is why polished granite shrugs off spills and stains better than honed. The trade-off is that it shows everything: fingerprints, water spots, and the odd scratch on a dark stone. It works best on kitchen countertops, vanity tops, and interior feature walls where you want the stone to be the loud part of the room.
Maintenance is light. Wipe it, reseal it once a year, and it holds its shine for decades.
Honed granite
Honing stops short of the polish. The surface is ground smooth but left matte, so the stone looks softer and more contemporary. Colours sit quieter and cooler, which is exactly why the look has taken over so many modern projects.
Honed grey is the finish we ship most of these days, and it isn’t close. Stones like Adhunik Grey and Sadarahalli were almost made for it. The catch is porosity: a honed surface is a touch more open than a polished one, so it can absorb oil or wine if you leave a spill sitting. On kitchen worktops that means sealing it properly and not treating it as bulletproof. On floors and stairs, honed is the safer bet anyway, because a matte surface is far less slippery when wet than a polished one.
Leather (leathered) granite
Leathering runs soft abrasive brushes over an already-honed slab. The result keeps the matte tone but adds a subtle rippled texture you can feel with your palm. It splits the difference between honed and polished: richer colour than honed, none of the mirror glare of polished.
Where leather really pays off is on dark granite. On a stone like Nagaram Black it hides fingerprints and water marks that would drive you mad on a polished black slab, which is why kitchens with dark stone lean on it so often. Flamed and other exterior finishes
Polished, honed and leather cover almost every indoor job. Outdoors is a different question. For paving, pool surrounds, and building facades you usually want a rougher, high-grip surface, and that means flamed, bush-hammered, or brushed. Flaming blasts the surface with intense heat so the crystals pop and flake, leaving a coarse matte texture that stays grippy in the rain. How to choose the right finish
Start from the application, not the look. A worktop that meets water and oil every day wants polished or well-sealed leather. A floor or a staircase wants honed, because slip resistance matters more than shine the moment the surface gets wet. A dark statement island wants leather, so it doesn’t turn into a fingerprint magnet. Anything outdoors wants flamed or bush-hammered.
The other thing to weigh is the stone itself. Busy, high-movement granites look their best polished, where the pattern gets room to show off. Calm, single-tone greys and whites often look more expensive honed. When you are unsure, order the same stone in two finishes on a sample board and decide with your eyes.
Specifying finish on an export order
Finish is one line on your order, and getting it right upfront saves a lot of grief later. When you enquire, confirm four things: the stone, the finish, the format (gangsaw slabs, cutter slabs, tiles, or cut-to-size), and the thickness. We supply granite in 16mm to 30mm depending on the stone and the use.
