Jaisalmer Yellow Sandstone comes from a city built almost entirely from it. For over a thousand years, the golden city of Jaisalmer in western Rajasthan has been constructed, carved, and maintained using this stone — and the results are architectural monuments of extraordinary beauty and longevity. The Jaisalmer Fort, the Patwon Ki Haveli, and hundreds of intricately carved buildings in the old city are living proof of what this stone can do when used well.
At Stone Harbor, we export Jaisalmer Yellow sourced directly from the Jaisalmer quarry region of Rajasthan. It is one of the most popular Indian sandstones in European markets — particularly in the UK, France, and Germany — where its warm golden tones complement both heritage architecture and contemporary design.
Origin and Composition
Jaisalmer Yellow Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed from quartz grains cemented together by silica and calcium carbonate. Its characteristic golden-yellow colour — ranging from pale creamy yellow to deeper mustard and amber tones — is produced by iron oxide minerals present within the quartz matrix. The stone has a fine, uniform grain structure that makes it exceptionally easy to carve and shape, a quality that has been exploited in Indian architecture since the medieval period.
Notably, Jaisalmer Yellow has excellent acid and thermal resistance — making it one of the few sandstones actively recommended for seaside and coastal construction, where salt-laden marine air would damage less resistant materials.
