Agra Red Sandstone is one of the most historically significant and visually commanding natural stones sourced from the Indian subcontinent. Quarried from the Dholpur district of Rajasthan — also known as Dholpur Red Sandstone — this stone has been used in some of the most iconic structures in the world, including the Agra Fort and Delhi’s Red Fort, both of which have stood for over four centuries with minimal weathering. That longevity is not incidental. It is a direct reflection of the stone’s exceptional durability and resistance to the elements.

Origin & Composition

Agra Red Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed over millions of years from compacted sand-sized grains of quartz and feldspar, cemented together by calcium carbonate and iron oxide. It is the iron oxide — specifically hematite — concentrated near the bedding planes of the stone that produces its characteristic deep red colouration. The richness of the red can range from a warm pinkish-red to a deeper burgundy with occasional dark mineral streaks. This natural variation is part of the stone’s character, not a defect.

The Agra Fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — was constructed in the 16th century predominantly from this stone.
