Patagonia Quartzite is one of the most distinctive and internationally traded exotic natural stones produced in India. Its defining characteristic is a bold, organic patchwork appearance — large crystalline quartz formations, cream-coloured fragments, and translucent sections arranged against a base of warm earthy tones in brown, black, grey, and gold — that creates a visual complexity no other stone replicates. Named by association with the wild, dramatic landscapes of South America, Patagonia Quartzite has been quarried and processed in Rajasthan and Gujarat for international export and remains one of the most consistent performers in the luxury natural stone market.
At Stone Harbor, we source Patagonia Quartzite from established quarry operations in Rajasthan and Gujarat, India, and export in slab and block form to clients across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. It is consistently one of the most enquired-about quartzites in our collection.
Origin & Composition
Patagonia Quartzite is formed when sandstone with an exceptionally high quartz content — typically 93% or above — undergoes intense heat and pressure, causing the quartz grains to recrystallise into an interlocking mosaic structure. This exceptionally high quartz content — significantly above that of typical quartzites — is responsible for both the stone’s unusual hardness and its distinctive visual character. The varied mineral inclusions — feldspar, carbonates, iron oxides, graphite — within the original sandstone create the patchwork mosaic pattern that defines Patagonia’s appearance. Sections of near-translucent quartz within each slab enable the backlit applications for which this stone is particularly sought after in hospitality design.
