Avocadus Quartzite

Avocadus Quartzite — also known internationally as Avocatus or Verde Avocatus — is one of the most visually arresting natural stones available in the quartzite category. Where most quartzites work within a palette of whites, greys, and neutrals, Avocadus makes a genuinely bold statement: a rich, saturated tropical green base interwoven with swirling patterns of white and black that evoke the layered density of a jungle canopy. It is a stone that requires no ornamentation — in any application, it is itself the defining design element.

At Stone Harbor, we source and export Avocadus Quartzite in slab and block form to architects, designers, and developers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. The stone is available in polished and alternative surface finishes, with custom sizing on request.

Origin & Composition

Avocadus Quartzite is a metamorphic stone formed when silica-rich sandstone undergoes sustained heat and pressure deep within the earth’s crust, causing the quartz grains to recrystallise into an interlocking mosaic structure. The stone’s deep green colouration results from chlorite, epidote, and other ferro-magnesian minerals embedded in the quartz matrix during metamorphism. The distinctive white and black swirling patterns are produced by veins of contrasting mineral composition introduced through the stone’s natural fracture systems. Avocadus is sourced from quarry operations in Brazil and India, where it is processed into slab format for international export. Its exceptionally high quartz content — in excess of 90% — gives it the hardness and durability that distinguish quartzite from softer decorative stones.

Technical Properties

  • Stone Type: Natural metamorphic quartzite
  • Origin: Brazil / India
  • Colour: Deep, warm tropical green with swirling white and black accent veining
  • Hardness: 7 – 8 on the Mohs scale
  • Density: Approximately 2.65 g/cm³
  • Water Absorption: Very low — less than 0.4%
  • Heat Resistance: High — significantly more heat tolerant than marble
  • Scratch Resistance: Excellent — harder than most granites and all marbles
  • Backlit Potential: Moderate — lighter sections of the stone transmit light
  • Slab Thickness: 18 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm standard

Available Finishes

  • Polished: High-gloss mirror finish that deepens and saturates the green tones. The most impactful presentation of this stone.
  • Leathered: A textured surface that adds tactile depth while maintaining the rich green character. Increasingly popular for countertop and wall applications.
  • Brushed: Lightly textured finish that softens the surface reflectivity.
  • Honed: Smooth matte finish for a more understated expression of the green palette.
  • Bush Hammered: Heavily textured surface for exterior and high-grip applications.
  • Sandblasted: Roughened surface suitable for outdoor paving and facade cladding.

Sizes & Dimensions

  • Slab sizes: 250 cm × 130 cm and above; 240 cm × 60/70/80/90 cm
  • Standard thickness: 18 mm, 20 mm, 30 mm
  • Blocks available for monumental and large-format applications
  • Custom cut-to-size for countertops, wall panels, and furniture

Applications

  • Kitchen Countertops: A bold statement choice for kitchen surfaces where the green palette becomes the central design feature.
  • Feature & Accent Walls: Interior feature walls in luxury residences, hospitality spaces, and corporate interiors.
  • Flooring: Commercial lobbies, hotel corridors, and luxury residential spaces where a dramatic, durable floor is required.
  • Bathroom Vanities: A transformative choice for bathroom surfaces that moves well beyond conventional stone options.
  • Bar Tops & Reception Counters: High-traffic commercial surfaces where durability and visual impact are equally important.
  • Tabletops & Furniture: Dining tables, coffee tables, and decorative stone furniture where the stone’s unique veining makes each piece one-of-a-kind.
  • Backlit Panels: Select sections of the stone transmit light, enabling dramatic backlit installations in bars, reception areas, and feature walls.

Avocadus Quartzite is a stone for projects that have the confidence to make an unambiguous statement. Its combination of tropical green depth, organic swirling patterning, and quartzite-class hardness puts it in a category few natural stones can inhabit. At Stone Harbor, all material is sourced from established quarry operations and exported to client specifications. Custom quantities, finishes, and sizes are available.
